Solid surface material brings the mystique of the Arabian Nights to life
Wie eine Fata Morgana ragt der grau glänzende Monolith aus dem flirrenden Wüstensand. Nähert man sich der skulpturalen Anlage, stellt man jedoch schnell fest, dass die Erscheinung ganz real ist. Das imposante Kulturzentrum King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture in Dhahran, Saudi-Arabien, vereint vier Museen, eine Bibliothek, ein Kino, ein Auditorium für 930 Besucher und mehrere Ausstellungshallen unter einem Dach. Es schafft so die Plattform für eine breite Palette an Veranstaltungen. Die Saudi Aramco Oil Company verfolgt damit als Bauherr das Ziel, die kulturelle Entwicklung im Königreich mit einer großen Vielfalt an Angeboten zu fördern.
What were the challenges, and how did we come up with a solution?
The exhibition design for Gallery 4 is distinctive in its organic forms and seamless transitions between the individual thematic areas. The main challenge here was how to create large-scale wall structures without clear rectangular geometries.
The use of solid surface material enabled us to produce the curved shapes with precision and to join them together to form a continuous, uniform finish. The result was a wall design that links the various exhibition areas and enhances the overall spatial effect.

What steps had to be taken to achieve this?
Based on the preliminary design, the complex geometries were developed in technical detail, broken down into individual components and manufactured with precision. The large-scale wall structures were then prepared on site to ensure they were ready for installation, then fitted with care.
This project demonstrates how complex geometries and large-scale interior fitting elements can be implemented precisely and in a way that facilitates installation.
