Strikingly designed exhibition elements made from solid surface material at the State Museum of Archaeology (smac)
What were the challenges, and how did we come up with a solution?
The State Museum of Archaeology in Chemnitz is a modern exhibition space that showcases historical artefacts within a clearly structured, contemporary architectural setting. The requirements for this project were demanding: the complex free-form geometries, tight spatial constraints within the existing building and high visitor numbers called for exhibition elements that were precise and robust, yet also unobtrusive.
This meant creating sculptural forms that would blend seamlessly into the surrounding architecture while also fulfilling functions such as directing and guiding visitors and presenting exhibits. Despite the limited transport distances, large components had to be manufactured in a modular fashion and assembled on site without any visible joints.
Solid surface material was used to produce highly precise thermoformed elements with a homogeneous overall look. A monolithic appearance was created with the help of digital 3D design, CNC manufacturing and concealed joint solutions, while integrated technology and hard-wearing surfaces meet the demands of a busy museum environment. The result is a calm, uncluttered layout that clearly places the exhibits in the spotlight and intuitively guides visitors through the exhibition.

What steps had to be taken to achieve this?
The detailed technical designs for the solid surface elements were based on the overall design concept and structurally adapted to accommodate the complex free-form shapes. These elements were then produced using thermoforming, and functional components such as media technology, lighting and signage were integrated.
The modules were provided ready for assembly and put together seamlessly on site to create a feature that will meet the aesthetic and functional requirements of a modern museum setting for years to come.
