What were the challenges, and how did we come up with a solution?

The Pace University project presented the team with some specific challenges: the heavy, large-format solid surface elements – including a 14-metre-long counter with a seamlessly integrated seating – had to be transported into the building through narrow access points and assembled with precision on site. The dark, high-gloss finishes also required the utmost care and craftsmanship, as any imperfection would be clearly visible.

The solution lay in a modular, digitally coordinated design. The heavy panels were cut into transportable sections, carefully processed using CNC machining and combined with HPL-clad sub-structures. A total of 26 crates containing components were shipped to New York, where it took several months to assemble them into eleven perfectly fitted furniture modules. The result was a robust, cohesive interior design feature that instantly appealed to students and staff alike.

What steps had to be taken to achieve this?

The detailed technical designs for the solid surface elements were based on the overall design concept and structurally adapted to accommodate the complex free-form shapes. These elements were then produced using thermoforming, and functional components such as media technology, lighting and signage were integrated.

The modules were provided ready for assembly and put together seamlessly on site to create a feature that will meet the aesthetic and functional requirements of a modern museum setting for years to come.
