Facade for the Train Station in Schwaebisch Gmuend
Rosskopf + Partner manufactured curved strips of solid surface material for the pedestrian underpass at the train station in Schwaebisch Gmuend. The unusual wall cladding consists of white ribbon-like bands along the walls that guide the passers-by through the underpass, therefore lighting the way for visitors to the city. The bands directly coincide with the height of the steps, making the transitions throughout the passageway harmonious. The bulged elements are indirectly illuminated with dynamically programmable LEDs. The cavity directly under each arch in the bands provides space for the lights. In the summer, the light is modelled after a fresh green rustle of leaves with translucent sunlight; in the fall and winter, autumn shades of colour then blend nicely into the foliage. At night, the tunnel glows a deep dark blue. The construction is simple and robust.
The ribbon-like bands are made of white solid surface material. In cooperation with 5D Engineering in Dresden, who was responsible for the statics and work planning, we manufactured these bands in our facility in Hennersdorf, Saxony. Completing this project required a maximum of coordination and cooperation with all project participants and associated handcrafters.
