Mobile Library made of Solid Surface Material

The first solid surface material on wheels: On behalf of the city of Heilbronn, Germany, Rosskopf & Partner AG has fabricated its first rolling library. The idea emerged as the city of Heilbronn was required to renovate their existing bookmobile that has been on the road since 1981 supporting elementary schools, day-care centres and districts in the city.

Consequently, the Stuttgart-based design office LINIE ZWEII was commissioned to design a new mobile library that could accommodate the new requirements of the current media society for both outward appearance and interior design. The result was ROBI, the rolling library, with lively elements and elements that can be moved.

For this project, the shelf-support system is made of white HI-MACS© S28 Alpine White and S302 Opal in a design with continuity. The shelves in the classic-styled entrance room are strictly geometrically parallel until they reach the so-called “adventure area” where they then disperse into freely-designed net-like shelves. The resulting lines of the shelf sections are then transferred to the outer surfaces in the form of quotations. Inside, reading mats and seat cubes in bright red colours entice readers to linger a while.

Rosskopf & Partner AG fabricated the rolling library in its Competence Centre for Solid Surface Material in Hennersdorf. The individual shelves are also equipped with lighted front components. The requirement to install the elements while complying with the special conditions for road traffic proved to be a special challenge.
