What is meant by translucency?

Translucency is a characteristic that describes the passage of a limited amount of light through a material. It is not like transparency, which allows you to see through an object. It is mostly unobtrusive and is used frequently for lighting effects in architecture. A well-known example is the award-winning Asian Bar in the Yang Sing restaurant in Manchester, manufactured by Ross & Partner from the solid surface material HI-MACS ® (product and registered trademark of LG Hausys). The translucent bar, designed by the architect, Roberta Fulford, is backlighted with a pattern of cane and reed bending in the wind, which underscores the nature-oriented ambience of the restaurant.
