If a museum can be called an event, the implication is that new territory is to be explored. In the case of the Porsche Museum, an interesting entry was selected for competition, because, initially, there were serious doubts about its feasibility.
Platform made of carsitec®ceramic in the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart. Architect: hg merz architekten, Delugan Meissl The design of the Viennese architectural office, DELUGAN MEISSL ASSOCIATED ARCHITECTS ZT Gesellschaft mbH, dared to venture into the outer limits of statistical possibilities. The museum consists of two separate building parts, whereby the museum body, which appears to be floating, rests like a ‘mother ship’ on the lower level. The so-called ‘flyer’ distributes its enormous burden on only three trunk-like supports with a total of five ‘branches’. A massive steel structure is supported on top of the underlying reinforced concrete structure – so a solution was needed that demanded a masterpiece of engineering from the contracting company. Leonhardt, Andrä and Partner, Consulting Engineers VBI, GmbH of Stuttgart were the optimal choice for this demanding task.
Inside the spectacular building, visitors move amid pleasant, clear aesthetics through a chronology of the development of the legendary sports car. In the lobby level, exhibits from the past era of the company and its vehicles are mounted on pedestals of green glass – a green that captures the eye of the visitors and affords an optical contrast to the strictly white atmosphere in the rest of the exhibition area. From there, you can experience the development of the Porsche by moving continually upward.
Along a black groove in the outer wall, some 80 sports cars line the wall and demonstrate their own history as exhibits. These make it possible to make spatial and intellectual excursions into the world of Porsche concepts. In their respective exposition areas, the characteristics of the company and its vehicles are communicated using display cases and terminals. Through text panels and screens, the composition of themes provides a gallery of the potential of the Porsche brand.
Rosskopf & Partner provided nearly 4500 m2 of solid surface material and 150 m2 of Glaskeramik for various components of the exhibition architecture; they also supported the contracting companies and produced individual components for the interior of this ambitious project.
